About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Encyclopaideia is an international peer reviewed journal, founded in 1996 at the University of Bologna by Piero Bertolini. It publishes 3 issues per year and is included in the ANVUR list of A-class scientific reviews for the research fields 11/D1 and 11/D2.
Encyclopaideia welcomes articles that come from a wide range of areas of education research and related disciplines. The journal publishes original theoretical and qualitative-empirical studies and analyses in the field of education in the broadest sense to stimulate a critical multidisciplinary debate.

We seek significant contributions that advance the theoretical understandings of the social and institutional contexts of education, the critical analysis of ethical and political issues in education, or the methodological reflection on educational research. Brief reports of studies to address a narrow question are not appropriate for submission.

We welcome manuscripts in the following areas: theory of education, educational policy, qualitative research reports. We also welcome critical reviews and commentaries addressing conceptual, theoretical, methodological, issues pertaining to qualitative research.
While the philosophical tradition of European phenomenology remains the broad theoretical framework of this journal, no specific methodology or philosophical orientation is required in submissions.

Keywords: phenomenological education; phenomenology; education theory; research methods in education; education policy

Peer Review Process

Each article, anonymous, will be submitted to double-blind peer-review process, which will involve the examination of at least two anonymous evaluators, specialists in the filed or method, whose reasoned written opinion will be communicated by the Editor to the corresponding author. As part of the initial quality assessment, each article will undergo plagiarism detection through iThenticate.

Listed below are the main criteria that drive the peer review process:

  • relevance of the themes;
  • coherence with the aims of the journal;
  • accurate and complete theoretical analysis;
  • quality of references and sources.

For empirical research report:

  • explicit generative research question;
  • appropriate method and design;
  • adequate sample;
  • saturation of data
  • relevant theoretical analysis and data discussion;
  • clear and accessible style.

Publication timeline

EnCP respects the publication timeline shown below in managing editorial workflow:

  • First round of peer review (within 6 weeks after the assignement to the reviewers);
  • Communication to the author (within 9 weeks after the first editorial approval);
  • Last editorial decision (within 2 weeks after modifications received).

Duties for the Editors

The Editors of Encyclopaideia are responsible for the selection process and the publication of articles submitted to the journal. They will take all reasonable steps to ensure the quality of the published material and to ensure a fair, unbiased and timely peer review process. Authors have the right to have manuscripts evaluated for their intellectual contents, without discrimination on grounds of their gender, sexual orientation, political or religious beliefs, ethnic or geographical origin.

The peer review process, as described in the journal policies, will be followed by Editors with accuracy. They will keep track of the process and will justify any important deviation of it.

The decision of the Editors as to accept or reject a paper for publication in the journal is based on subject relevance, originality, methodological and editorial appropriateness of the manuscripts and is guided by the review of suitably qualified Reviewers. The Editors will ensure that appropriate and qualified Reviewers are selected for each submission, and will send to Authors the entirety of their comments — unless their content is offensive.

The Editorial Team adopts a work-flow that ensure that material submitted to the Journal remains confidential while under review. Confidentiality of individual information obtained in the course of research or professional interactions must be guaranteed.

The Editorial Team provides to Authors guidelines that encourage accuracy, completeness and clarity of the texts.

The Editors will manage their competing interests as well as those of the staff, Reviewers, and Authors. The Editors have a process for handling submissions from the Editors and members of the Editorial Team to ensure unbiased review and the blindness of the peer-review process.

Editors decision may be constrained by legal requirements regarding libel, copyright infringement and plagiarism.

Editors ensure that contents are published on a timely basis, following the stated frequency. The authors will be informed beforehand in case of longer deadlines or any delay. Editors take all reasonable steps to guarantee that the published material is securely preserved and all articles are published in open access, freely available to anyone. Permanent identifiers as DOI and an archiving policy guarantee tracking and preservation of articles in the long term.

Duties for Authors

Author(s) should understand and scrupulously uphold high standards for ethical behaviour in the conduct of research, particularly in relation to the verification and truthful reporting of data, the granting of proper credit, and referencing of the work of others in publication. Plagiarism of another’s work is a form of theft and constitutes serious misconduct.

Regarding multiple author papers, it is essential that each co-author contributes significantly to the research reported and openly accepts joint responsibility for the work. If these conditions cannot be met, the person should not be included as an author.

Simultaneous submissions of an article describing the same research to more than one publication constitutes misconduct because it wastes editorial and referees’ time for the author’s own purposes. Similarly, publishing the same results in more than one primary research journal is a form of misconduct and is not acceptable. Exceptions are made for previous publication in conference proceedings and for papers previously published in another language. In both cases, it must be specified in the footnote or at the bottom of the paper. At submission an author is bound to disclose any prior appearance of the work so that the journal may make an informed decision about whether to accept it for peer review.

Authors must declare all the financial and non-financial support for their research. Authors must declare any potential competing interest and must comply with the peer-review process by submitting a properly anonymized manuscript.

Authors are asked to provide the raw data in connection with a paper for editorial evaluation. Authors are encouraged to deposit the underlying data in a public or institutional data repository for public accessibility and long-term preservation. Authors are also asked to provide full citation and a link to the deposited underlying data in the accepted manuscript. In case the underlying data cannot be shared on account of ethical or commercial restrictions, Authors should be prepared to retain such data for a reasonable time after publication and provide a suitable data availability statement.

Authors are asked to follow the Authors Guidelines published by the Journal, therefore ensuring accuracy, completeness and clarity of research reporting, including technical editing.

Authors have the responsibility to notify promptly the Editor if a significant error in their articles, both published and unpublished, is identified. Authors will cooperate with Editors in case any issue is raised with their articles.

Duties for Reviewers

Reviewers are provided guidance on everything that is expected of them including the need to handle submitted material in confidence.

Reviewers are required to disclose any potential competing interests before agreeing to review a submission.

Reviewers are encouraged to comment on the originality and the methodological appropriateness of submissions and to be alert to redundant publications and plagiarism. They will alert Editors regarding intellectual property issues and plagiarism and work to handle potential breaches of intellectual property laws and conventions.

Reviewers should help identifying relevant published work that has not been cited by the Authors.

Handling of errors and misconducts

The Editors assume the duty to act promptly in case of errors and misconducts, both proven and alleged. This duty extends to both published and unpublished papers. In case such as errors in articles or in the publication process, fraudulent publication or plagiarism, appropriate steps will be taken, following the recommendations and guidelines from COPE. Corrections will happen with due prominence, including the publication of an erratum (errors from the publication process), corrigendum (errors from the Author(s)) or, in the most severe cases, the retraction of the affected work.

The Journal policies will be reviewed periodically, particularly with respect to new recommendations from the COPE (last update: November 2019).

Data Policy

When relevant, authors are encouraged to follow Open Science and FAIR principles by publishing the research data associated to their articles in trusted data repositories, according to the international best practices and data management guidelines.

Detailed information is reported in the AlmaDL Journals Data Policy.

Authors who are affiliated to the University of Bologna can publish their data in AMSActa, the institutional research data repository.

Journal History

The journal was founded in 1996 by Piero Bertolini at the University of Bologna, department of Education. It rounded up the group of people that for ten years coordinated the book series for the “La Nuova Italia” editor.

The group was characterized by the sharing of the same theoretical perspective on the phenomenological pedagogy. After a couple of years spent with the Editor “Il Segnalibro”, the journal moved to Bologna where it became a journal supported by the University of Bologna. This entailed a first substantial change in the editorial structure that called for an international scientific committee.

Since 1999, Encyclopaideia published two issues a year with the CLUEB Editor, which was linked to the University of Bologna. In 2006, when its founder and director passed away, Massimiliano Tarozzi becomes the new director of the journal and he gave a clear international cut and adapted the journal to high quality standards by introducing rigorous procedures of peer review.

The scientific commitee enlarged in order to gather numerous International researcher.

The journal started to publish more and more articles edited in English, thus becoming an International journal. It also started to be indexed in many scientific database.

Since 2010 Encyclopaideia is published by the Bononia University Press and since 2011 it publishes three issues per year.

Since 2014 the journal moved its publications online with the University of Bologna being the editor and sponsor, thus choosing the Open Access administration.
