About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Encyclopaideia is an international peer reviewed journal, founded in 1996 at the University of Bologna by Piero Bertolini. It publishes 3 issues per year and is included in the ANVUR list of A-class scientific reviews for academic recruitment fields 11/D1 and 11/D2.
Encyclopaideia welcomes articles that come from a wide range of areas of education research and related disciplines. The journal publishes original theoretical and qualitative-empirical studies and analyses in the field of education in the broadest sense to stimulate a critical multidisciplinary debate.
We seek significant contributions that advance the theoretical understandings of the social and institutional contexts of education, the critical analysis of ethical and political issues in education, or the methodological reflection on educational research. Quantitative research reports and brief reports of studies to address a narrow question are not appropriate for submission.
We welcome manuscripts in the following areas: theory of education, educational policy, humanities in education, qualitative research reports. We also welcome critical reviews and commentaries addressing conceptual, theoretical, methodological, issues pertaining to educational research.
While the philosophical tradition of European phenomenology remains the broad theoretical framework of this journal, no specific methodology or philosophical orientation is required in submissions.
Keywords: phenomenological education; phenomenology; education theory; research methods in education; education policy

Peer Review Process
According to the Code of Ethics of the journal, the review process is organized in order to ensure transparency, authonomy of the reviewers, and absence of conflicts of interest.
Each article, made anonymous by the author, is previously evaluated by the Editor-in chief, in relation to the scope and scientific standards of the journal. Unfitting proposal will be declined. After passing this exam, the paper will be submitted to double-blind peer-review process, which will involve the examination of at least two external evaluators, specialists in the scientific field or method of research, whose reasoned written opinion will be communicated by the Editor to the corresponding author. Should acceptance be subject to particular requests of amendment, papers will be published only when the suggestions of the reviewers are properly implemented. The editorial team will verify the adequacy of the paper to the editorial norms of the journal and, in case of non-conformity, will ask authors to adapt their manuscript.
As part of the initial quality assessment, each article will undergo plagiarism detection through iThenticate.
Listed below are the main criteria that drive the peer review process:
- relevance and originality of the themes;
- coherence with the aims of the journal;
- clarity, accuracy and completeness of argumentation;
- appropriateness and quality of references and sources.
For empirical research reports are required:
- explicit generative research question;
- appropriate research method and design;
- adequate sample and data collection;
- saturation of data
- relevant theoretical analysis and data discussion;
- compliance with ethical standards for scientific research.
In exceptional cases, under responsability of the Editor-in-chief, a paper can be published without passing the peer review process: in this cases it will be expressively declared in the body text.

Journal History
The journal was founded in 1996 by Piero Bertolini at the University of Bologna, department of Education. It rounded up the group of people that for ten years coordinated the book series for the “La Nuova Italia” editor.
The group was characterized by the sharing of the same theoretical perspective on the phenomenological pedagogy. After a couple of years spent with the Editor “Il Segnalibro”, the journal moved to Bologna where it became a journal supported by the University of Bologna. This entailed a first substantial change in the editorial structure that called for an international scientific committee.
Since 1999, Encyclopaideia published two issues a year with the CLUEB Editor, which was linked to the University of Bologna. In 2006, when its founder and director passed away, Massimiliano Tarozzi becomes the new director of the journal and he gave a clear international cut and adapted the journal to high quality standards by introducing rigorous procedures of peer review.
The scientific commitee enlarged in order to gather numerous International researcher.
The journal started to publish more and more articles edited in English, thus becoming an International journal. It also started to be indexed in many scientific database.
Since 2010 Encyclopaideia is published by the Bononia University Press and since 2011 it publishes three issues per year.
Since 2014 the journal moved its publications online with the University of Bologna being the editor and sponsor, thus choosing the Open Access administration.
In 2018 Daniele Bruzzone is nominated editor-in-chief, with the purpose of provinding continuity to the tradition and developing the cultural project of the journal.
